The folks who surf Uluwatu are often the kind of folks whose step-ups don’t collect much dust. The left-hander has its fair share of days that call for a little extra foam and fewer heads bobbing in the lineup. But there’s a level we see beyond that about once a year where the Jet Skis get fueled up and tow ropes are taken out. This was one of those days.
However, the crowd wasn’t so thin simply because the waves were big and the weekend warriors on holiday got scared off. This particular session was dug up and posted recently after a few years of sitting in the archives — a flashback to the 2020 COVID-19 summer that saw most travel around the world grind to a halt. There were a handful of surfers who found themselves stranded in March, at the beginning of it all, and there were a handful of blokes who leaned into the hand they’d been dealt because, well, what the hell were most of them gonna do back home anyway?
I have no clue if that’s what happened to the hellmen in this video. In all likelihood, many of them live on Bali and enjoyed that tiny window of time when crowds were thinner and getting a few late-July waves on a bombing day didn’t require navigating hordes of tourists.
