The Inertia

Reality television is all the rage these days. Real(ish) people doing real(ish) things. Challenges and immunities and enormous cash prizes. The first iteration of surfing/reality television appears to have failed in rather spectacular fashion, but the next version is just around the corner. It’s called Make Or Break, an Apple TV Docuseries.

It’s not exactly reality television, though. According to a press release, the first season of Make or Break “offers an intimate deep dive into the aspirations, challenges, accomplishments, and personal lives of the surfers who compete to remain on the elite 2021 Men’s and Women’s WSL Championship Tour (CT), and takes viewers on a journey to stunning surfing locations across the globe.” It also “follows the 2021 competition, navigating as the league responds to the global pandemic, while exploring the dynamic surfing culture along with timely issues, including diversity, mental health, and the physical impact of the sport.”

One of the producers of the show is Paul Martin. He, as you may or may not be aware, held the same credit on Formula 1: Drive to Survive. That show breathed new life into F1 racing, and it’s likely that the WSL is banking on his talents to do the same thing to surfing.

Only time will tell, though, but the trailer? Well, it certainly looks good. It premieres on April 29 on AppleTV+.
