If you’re perhaps slightly out of the loop when it comes to the ins and outs of surf spots, you’d be forgiven for thinking only of Nazaré as the place with the biggest waves on the planet. But the inside, on those smaller days — relative to the biggest days, of course — serves up some very good waves. Very heavy, too. Portugal is a beautiful place, full of amazing waves, food, sights, history, and people.
Nazaré’s explosion as a surf destination was carefully orchestrated, using Garrett McNamara as a spokesman. It’s an interesting story, but the campaign put the biggest of Nazaré’s waves in the spotlight and kind of ignored the waves mortals can surf. In the video above, shot in October, we see what the place looks like on a day that’s a little more manageable than, say, days like this.
