“Have you ever jumped off a four-story tall building and landed face first in a swimming pool?” This is how videographer Steve Cummings describes wiping out at Nazaré. It seems like a pretty fair metaphor.
Steve, AKA the JacuzziSurfer, left Southern California recently to trounce around Portugal and document the kickoff of Nazaré’s big wave season. He’s filmed some gems so far and in that time, he’s caught glimpse of the beatings handed out there. And while most wipeout reels are the most violent tumbles from top to bottom, lips crashing down on top of innocent, defenseless, bodies that are about to get rag dolled, this is a slightly different take on a common Nazaré wipeout. Instead, we see a lot of people flying on wave faces so fast that they can’t hang on, skipping along the surface of the water like a tiny rock on a pond.
