The Inertia

Lost Shore Surf Resort in Edinburgh, Scotland recently claimed the title of Europe’s largest wave pool. The Wavegarden-designed pool opened on Monday, November 11, and a recent video from surf YouTuber Dan Harmon gives us a glimpse into what it actually looks like to ride the new attraction.

Harmon’s first reaction, like it would be for many of us, was to the frigid Edinburgh weather that sets it apart from your typical surf destination. “It was so cold when we first paddled out, because the water’s like six degrees, so it’s freezing,” he described. “Then, once you start getting loads of waves, it was absolutely fine. There’s like four waves in a set, which doesn’t sound like that many, but there’s only like five of us surfing, so there were more than enough waves. I think there’s 28 sets, so I rode basically 28 waves in an hour, which is quite a lot.”

As for the tube itself, Harmon explained, “We got like a couple seconds where you can just either do a little turn, like a little carve or tail slide or just sort of wait, which is kind of what I did. I just sort of just cruised and tried to set up the barrel and just tried to think about like my foot placement and stuff. Obviously, it’s not a crazy tube, it’s just little nuggy head dips, but it’s quite cool to have that repetition and just be able to do that over and over and over again.”
