In college, I was lucky enough to spend four years living in San Diego. Both north and south counties have innumerable quality waves, but when Black’s is firing, there’s no place like it. During my short stint, I gained a certain familiarity with its trails and got my ass handed to me on more than one occasion, but over the years I can honestly say I never once asked myself from where Black’s derives its name – the Black family as it turns out. I also vaguely understood the mechanics of Black’s – something about an underwater canyon – but couldn’t tell you the details.
Luckily, Youtuber JacuzziSurfer recently put together a little history lesson on San Diego’s most famous beach break with some details that, if you’re like me, you may not have been aware of.
