The Inertia

A lot more goes into catching a wave at Nazaré than just grabbing a tow line and holding on for dear life. Obviously, you have to know what to do once you’re actually on a wave the size of an office building, but the journey to get there starts long before. There’s physical conditioning to be able to handle multi-wave hold downs, analysis of the wave itself (which can be as unpredictable as it is massive), and just mentally preparing yourself to not panic in the face of very real danger.

Recently, YouTube channel Barena Film & Sports has been delving deep into exactly what goes into all that preparation with their “Explaining Nazaré” series. With their latest release, they get into the practical logistics involved in a Praia Do Norte strike mission. From wetsuits to jet skis to impact vests, these are all the nuts and bolts that go into riding the world’s biggest wave.
