The Inertia

The surfing community was left heartbroken by the passing of world-renowned water photographer and filmmaker, Sonny Miller, in July. The 53-year-old cameramen tragically suffered a heart attack this past summer. “Cap’n Fun” as he was known, was remembered for not only for the incredible films he left behind such as The Search series, but more importantly for the joy and love he exuded to all those around him.

Sonny’s last film project was a Hollywood film called Ride. Helen Hunt wrote, directed, produced, and stars in the film. Hunt plays the role of a New Yorker editor who follows her son to California when he drops out of college to surf and finds himself. However, Hunt is the one who truly embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and during her time in California she befriends a limo driver, canoodles with a younger surf instructor, and heals her broken relationship with her son. Hunt says, “I made this movie for mothers, sons, fathers, daughters, surfers and people who fall apart and come back together.”

Miller shot Ride’s water photography, and the film will be dedicated to him. The film will be released in the second quarter of 2015, and it also stars Brenton Thwaites, Luke Wilson, and David Zayas.
