CJ Hobgood is very nice man. Almost disarmingly nice, in fact – he’s one of those guys that looks you square in the eye, has a solid handshake, and is engaged with the conversation, something that is increasingly rare. So when we sat down with the 2001 world champion, it felt like more of a candid conversation than an interview, which of course, always makes for the best interviews.
After a heat at last year’s Trestles event, CJ sat down in the hot sun behind the contest tents, a light breeze ruffling the grass behind him. He smiled, shifted slightly in an uncomfortable chair, and began to talk openly about his greatest fear, his religion, and surfing as an addiction. But you don’t need us to tell you–watch for yourself.
