The ocean goes flat sometimes. There’s nothing to be done about it other than wait it out. But the waiting can be filled with more productive uses of time than crying and putting on your Pray for Surf t-shirt. And what’s more satisfying than making something useful for those flat days than a handplane. Yeah, Callen Busch is making beautiful ones, and yours might not look as pretty… but in the end, it’s a piece of wood attached to your hand so you can get pitted in the shorebreak.
Five years ago, Busch started making his handplanes during a long San Diego flat spell. Since then, he’s built on his skills and started using different types of woods, incorporating different styles, and become something of a pyrography expert.
