The Inertia

A little under an hour from São Paulo, Brazil, there’s something big in the works. It’s called Boa Vista Village, and it’s a project of enormous proportions. One small part of it? The world’s largest wave pool, powered by American Wave Machines. It covers six acres and offers up a pretty staggering variety of waves.

Years and years ago now, The Inertia had a little booth at some now-forgotten (by me) trade show. The booth next to us was American Wave Machines, which, if memory serves correctly, didn’t have a full-sized pool built just yet. Its booth consisted of a little pool model that showed how a real one would work. This was in the early days of wave pools — I don’t think the Surf Ranch was revealed just yet — and I was pretty interested in how things worked. The little waves the model was creating were perfect; tiny little things being mind-surfed by everyone who happened to walk by. Now, as you know, American Wave Machines’ Perfect Swell technology is in Waco, Texas, Makinohara, Shizuoka, Japan, and East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The pool you see in the video above, as I mentioned, is part of Boa Vista Village. It’s a real estate development that includes the pool, a commercial shopping area, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, an equestrian center, tennis courts, and a town center. Judging from the looks of things, it’ll be a pretty classy joint, if not a little tight. But if your jam includes an apartment and easy access to a freakishly huge wave pool… well, here’s your chance.
