Last week, while everyone on the North Shore was waiting for the call to be made for the Sunset Beach Pro, Havaianas, the iconic Brazilian flip-flop brand and a first-time sponsor of the event, loaded up its van with slipper-shaped floats and headed south to Waikiki to spend some quality time in the water and prove that “perfect tubes” exist all over Oahu.

“We wanted to get even closer to Hawaii and its beautiful local people, the original inspiration for the original flip flop brand’s name,” says Fernanda Ramos, Havaianas marketing lead for the U.S. “Havaianas actually means “Hawaiians” in Portuguese and we are simply delighted to be here and show how amazing the beach culture is here and how present it is in everyone’s lives.”

Havaianas has been spreading the Brazilian form of aloha since 1962. For many Brazilians in the 1960s, Hawaii was the ultimate dream destination as a surfer’s paradise and tropical getaway. Feeling so inspired by the Hawaiian way of life, the perfect beaches, laid back attitude, and radiant smiles, Havaianas could not have fit their mission and drive any better. There’s no doubt that Havaianas exemplifies the aloha spirit, through its inclusivity and dedication to producing styles that let anyone and everyone be themselves. Today, the Havaianas flip-flop has become a symbol for island life, sunshine and fun.

As an official sponsor of the World Surf League, Havaianas made its return to the Rainbow State in a vintage Volkswagen van, affectionately called the Havaianas Kombi, which can be seen popping up at the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach and all over Oahu. The Kombi van dates back to 1964, when Havaianas were sold out of the backs of vans all over Brazil.

In addition to sponsoring the Sunset Beach Pro, Havaianas has partnered with some local talents to produce content about the Hawaiian way of life and tell their own inspiring stories worldwide throughout summer season, and their van will be popping up around Oahu for the next six months.
