The Inertia

Kauai’s Hanalei Bay has been closed to swimming and other ocean activities after a surfer was bitten at The Bowl on Sunday afternoon. Preliminary reports suggest the bite may have been from a large shark.

Around 4:00 p.m. a man was surfing at the popular break known as The Bowl, when he was bitten in the leg, as KHON2 reports. Though initial reports ascribed the bite to a large shark, the actual size and species of the animal is unknown. Shortly afterward, the surfer was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in stable condition. Though the extent of the injury has been as-yet unreported, officials say it was non-life threatening.

Since the incident, “Shark Sighted” and “No Swimming” signs have been posted by lifeguards along the bay. The water will remain off-limits to beachgoers until lifeguards reassess the water Monday afternoon to determine if it is safe for swimming.
