
By now, of course, you know that Julian Wilson and Lakey Peterson went home victorious after the Quik Pro Gold Coast. You know that the event moved from Snapper to Kirra. You know that while Kirra was good, word on the street is that Snapper turned into something out of this world. While Parko may have scored “the best barrel ever” at Snapper the day after the contest left for Kirra, rookie Griffin Colapinto was hell-bent on making a damn good first impression. Oh, and did he ever.
During his quarterfinal heat against Michel Bourez—only the second time in his life that Colapinto surfed Kirra—he paddled into a wave that just kept on giving. Even Griffin seemed surprised when that third tube showed up. The judges took less than 10 seconds to award him a perfect score, and with it, Colapinto made that impression.
