The Inertia

Back on February 7, lineups in Southern California were a little bit emptier than usual. The Super Bowl was on, and many surfers chose to stay at home and watch large men smashing into each other repeatedly while chasing a small, inflated bit of leather. Carlos Gauna, the man who routinely catches some absolutely incredible footage of great white sharks (like this, this, this, and this) realized that he had an opportunity to see normally crowded beaches with fewer people on them, so he fired up the drone and went for a tour.

He ended up watching a few surfers for a while, but he’s always on the lookout for great white sharks — which might have been a lucky break, because he spotted one approaching the surfers. While it’s not likely that the shark was hunting them, it’s generally a good idea to leave the water if there’s a predator around.
