The Inertia

Nature is the ultimate teacher. Case in point? This recent video that comes out of Nantucket, a popular Massachusetts island with a healthy surf culture. The filmer on this boat captured the ultimate biology lesson, as a great white shark tears a seal in half only feet from the shoreline.

With seal populations booming, it’s been another notable summer on the East Coast in terms of shark encounters. In early July, beaches were closed in Long Island after five shark bites were reported in a single week. New York authorities then deployed drone patrols in the region to warn beachgoers.

The above video was posted to the YouTube page of the Nantucket Current, a news outlet on the island. In 2018, a body boarder was attacked and killed by a shark in Cape Cod, Mass. It was the first fatal shark attack in the region in 80 years.
