Sometimes, it’s the regular old citizens that help protect their fellow inhabitants of the Earth, which is always heartwarming in today’s climate. Take these drone operators who operate the Drone Shark App (and the YouTube page of the same name), which provides surf conditions and shark warnings at several beaches near Sydney including Bondi and Tamarama, among others.
The duo spotted this healthy-sized great white near Tamarama (above), so they warned swimmers and rescue personnel about the shark using a bull horn. Similarly, the operators of the app sent out warnings after spotting this great white feeding on a tuna near Bondi, below.
The app was developed in 2017. “Drone Shark App provides drone footage for surfers and shark alerts for beach-goer protection,” reads a description. “In a bid to keep people safe in Australia beaches [sic], the new surf app uses high tech shark spotting drones to detect sharks and protect swimmers.”
According to the descriptions, the app’s creator was a surfer growing up with a passion for ocean safety, running the app without any government funding. “We believe lifeguards need to be better prepared to know if sharks, stingrays, or any other dangerous creatures are on the beach on any given day.”
