Every surfer has a bucket list. It’s simple, really: just a few places on this beautiful planet we call home that hold the best waves in the world. But there’s an issue with that. Every surfer has a bucket list, and there are way more surfers than there are spots on those lists. So how does one avoid the crowds while still scoring perfect waves? Well, you just have to find the right place.
Salina Cruz, Mexico is one of the right places. Sitting just about as far south as one can go in Mexico, its front yard is the warm waters of the southern Pacific. Part of nearly 80 miles of postcard-perfect coastline, the direction of that amazing stretch is just about as good as one can get if they’re looking for variety of waves. From long, reeling points and dumping, sand-filled beach breaks to slabby death waves and giant barrels, chances are good that somewhere along the way, you’ll find what you’re looking for, and a whole lot more.
Mainland Mex has long been a surfer’s mecca, but because of the distance required to get there and a few world class waves to the north, the areas surrounding Salina Cruz remain as a relatively uncrowded wonderland, compared to other places. While the town itself has waves aplenty, it’s the areas out of the town that give up the real goods. If you want to stay in town, though, and score some of the most amazing waves of your life while soaking up some real Mexican culture (Tijuana on a Friday night doesn’t count), make sure to choose wisely. Like everywhere else off the beaten path, choosing the right place can make or break your trip. Punta Escondida Surf Tours has your back with guides that will show you the best places to surf in the area.
But if it’s serenity you’re looking for, just close enough to Salina Cruz to not feel like you’re on a deserted island but far enough away that you can lay your weary head on your pillow to the sound of the waves is a place called Playa Brasillito and a resort called Punta Conejo. Located just a short walk around a headland is a classic right hander that shares the same name as the resort. Punta Conejo is a sand point that offers up Malibu-esque waves that can reel for 1000 feet when it’s on. And to the north and south? Endless opportunity awaits.
But along with the 80 miles of coastline littered with waves comes a lot of looking. And, as any well-worn surf traveller knows, there’s no substitute for a good ol’ fashioned local guide and a 4×4. Because of the shape of the coastline, made up of headlands and deep, sheltered bays, it’s rare to find a day without a wave. Since the roads there aren’t exactly glittering highways–many are simply dirt tracks with no signs–it’s nearly impossible to reach many of them without the aforementioned guide and 4×4, so the resort employs a stacked list of knowledgable surfers who know the area like no one else.
The resort itself, while located on a secluded stretch of sand, has just about everything you could wish for when it comes to modern comforts: wifi to check those surf reports, cell signal to keep your friends at home in the loop (and jealous), and incredible food.
And when you’re too tired to surf anymore, you won’t just be stuck doing nothing. The guides know not only the best waves in the area, but the best fishing spots and a whole grab-bag full of other Mexican goodies that will keep you entertained until your surf sore shoulders are back up to snuff. And you’d better get them back up to snuff quick, because this is a place you absolutely have to surf.
