Nikki van Dijk is from Phillip Island, Victoria, near the Southeast tip of Australia. She comes from a family of surfers and has always lived by the beach.
We shot this video feature during the Australian Open of Surfing when the weather was unusually cold, windy, and rainy for a March in Sydney. We shot it on the Northern Beaches, the home of one of her close family friends, while she surfed a local break that typically works in larger south swells and is sheltered from strong southerly winds. The surf had been big and messy in the days before this shoot but we managed to find some clean-faced waves to capture the World Tour surfer doing her thing. Nikki has such a good energy about her, always smiling and stoked. We discussed her surfing background, her family influence, her inspirations, her favorite places to surf, and highlights of her career.
