Gerry Lopez is Mr. Pipeline. He is synonymous with one of the most powerful waves on earth; the benchmark for how waves should be ridden. He is style personified, part of the sand at Pipe, and one of surfing’s biggest legends. He also lives in Bend, Oregon, and traded palms and Pipeline for river waves and powder surfing.
In this installment of Weird Waves, Dylan Graves heads to Bend spend a few hours with Gerry and his son, Alex, who has sucked up all that style his father exhibited on waves and transferred it to the mountains. As it turns out, just like any other wave, the wave in Bend has a local scene of dedicated surfers, and both Gerry and Alex are deeply entrenched.
