Ireland is not the easiest place to surf. It isn’t perfect, warm-water pointbreaks, blue skies, and crystal clear water. It’s a place lashed by storms that churn out heavy, freezing waves that break over shallow rock shelves. But for the surfer who likes a challenge, Ireland is perfect. Enter. Gearoid McDaid, a man who has carved out a spot in the surfing world by putting himself in places that many surfers wouldn’t. It’s not always the easiest thing to do, though.
“There were a few days where it just didn’t feel right for me. My head just wasn’t in it.” McDaid said. “I remember one really heavy day, not even giving it a go. I watched from the channel as a wave unloaded on the shallow shelf and spat its guts out. It was if the wave was taunting me. Thinking back on that day, I told myself: I cannot let that hesitation get the best of me ever again.”
Over the Ledge, the film you see above, is the story of McDaid’s progression over the last year. He didn’t want to be the guy watching from the channel ever again, so he took that fear and embraced it. McDaid, Nic von Rupp, and William Aliotti looked for some seriously serious surf in Ireland and the Canary Islands. And yes, they found them.
