2025 is off to a rough start for Gabriel Medina. Yesterday, the Brazilian phenomenon took to social media to announce that he will be out on injury for the foreseeable future.

“Last Thursday, in Maresias, I suffered a pectoral injury and this morning I underwent a surgical procedure to begin treating this injury,” wrote Medina on Instagram. “Everything went well and we are already looking at the recovery period and next steps.

The post also included a video that appears to show the moment Medina suffered his injury. In it, the Brazilian comes out of a barrel and launches a massive air, but things quickly go awry upon landing. Gabriel loses his balance and falls backwards, reaching out with his right arm to break the fall. The momentum wrenches his arm up, which presumably caused the pectoral injury.

However, despite the setback, Medina appears to be optimistic. “I was preparing and very focused for the 2025 season, but unfortunately I will be out for a while,” he continued. “I will now focus on my recovery to come back stronger!”
