The Inertia

When it comes to aerial surfing, a few people come to mind. A lot of people, actually, but two on tour definitely come to mind: Gabriel Medina and Italo Ferreira. Their prowess was particularly on display during the Australian leg of the Championship Tour, where they appeared to be in a league of their own.

As you likely know, Medina won the Rottnest event. “This has been my best year so far,” he said after his win at the Rip Curl Rottnest Search. “It feels good to be surfing the way I like. I am blessed to have these waves on tour, travel with my wife, and all these people around me. I want to enjoy this moment.”

“Medina is looking almost unstoppable this year — which is saying a lot, given his previous history — and already has four finals and two wins under his belt. John John’s injury removed another obstacle and it is only Italo that seems to be operating anywhere near his orbit,” Ben Mondy wrote for the WSL. “We may look back at this Australian leg where Gabriel reasserted his extended dominance over the sport.”

Given all that, the League kindly stitched together a few minutes of Medina and Ferreira taking to the air. It’s incredible how far surfing has progressed, isn’t it?
