The Inertia

The last time the WSL (neé ASP) ran an event at G-Land, it was 1997. That was the same year that Dolly the sheep was cloned. The year Diana died. The chess computer Deep Blue beat Kasparov. The first Harry Potter book was released. One-hundred and fifty countries signed onto the Kyoto Protocol in one of the first real attempts at curbing climate change. Heaven’s Gate members drank the Kool-Aid, Mother Teresa died, Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear off, and Tiger Woods became the youngest ever golfer to win the Masters. Busy year, that 1997. Well, now G-Land, one of the world’s most perfect left-handers, is readying itself to sound the horn again. It went out with a bang, too — and with any luck, it’ll re-enter the ring with one.

In that last year of the Quik Pro G-Land, Luke Egan took home the trophy. It was one of four of his career wins, and in order to do so, he had to take out one of the best to ever surf G-Land, Tom Carroll. With that in mind, and since 1997 was so damn long ago, the WSL thought it was worth it to scrounge up footage from that particular event. It’s an hour of incredible surfers in mind-meltingly good waves. Speedies served up 8-10 foot barrels. Fourteen perfect 10s were awarded. Fingers crossed we see a repeat of these conditions!
