As you undoubtedly know, the World Surf League held the Rumble at the Ranch last weekend. It was the first event since the world shut down, and it was a little different than pre-pandemic events. It was a mixed-doubles event — which surely tickled Bobby Martinez a little — and it wasn’t for points, so it was just an exhibition to wet the whistle of thirsty surf fans.
It went pretty much as you’d expect: a bit of safety surfing in the early rounds, technical broadcast difficulties, and not-safe-at-all surfing in the final round. Case in point, Filipe Toledo’s 9.67 for a pair of alley-oops. Classic Toledo, right?
