The Fiji Pro, stop number five on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Tour ran through round two and part of round three yesterday. The surf at Cloudbreak turned on, and while it still wasn’t exactly that epic Cloudbreak we all hope for, it was good enough to set up a few ridiculous displays of surfing.
Round two was a bit of surprise, competitor-wise. A few of the men weren’t exactly used to being relegated to the second round – Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning, to be exact. They both won their heats with relative ease.
The upset of the day came when Tiago Pires beat C.J. Hobgood, a standout in Fiji. Known for his left-hand barrel riding capabilities, C.J. has always done well at Cloudbreak and Restaurants, but Pires took and held the lead at the twenty-minute mark.
