A few weeks ago, surfing lost one of its best players. Allan Byrne passed away after a motorcycle accident in Bali. The 62-year-old was there to compete in the Rip Curl Padang Padang Cup.
While renowned for his channel bottom concave surfboard design, Byrne was just as well known for his barrel riding. After winning the Pipe Masters back in ’81, Bryne spent a lifetime chasing perfect waves all over the world.
Due to existing health conditions, he wasn’t insurable on his trip to Bali, leaving his family with the cost of bringing him home.
As such, “The Festival of AB” will take place at the Gold Coast’s Currumbin Creek Tavern on September 14. It’s featuring Tumbleweed, an Australian rock band, and Melbourne’s Money for Rope. A long list of door prizes including a brand new AB hand-shaped board and a Mentawai surf boat holiday will also be available.
Due to venue capacity, tickets for the Festival of AB are limited to 400. All proceeds from the event will go directly to Byrne’s family.
