A surfboard shaper should know how to surf. They should know how to surf well enough to be able to explain how a few concepts of fluid mechanics and dynamics and how those can affect your surfing. Otherwise, you’re just buying a surfboard from a guy who makes a thing that looks like a surfboard. Enter Emerick Ishikawa, a man who shapes odd surfboards and surfs on them very, very well. A few weeks ago, he popped up on our radar with an edit of him surfing beautifully on a hand-shaped 5’6 twin fin. But it doesn’t seem to matter what board it is, because like a good shaper, Ishikawa understands surfboards.
