The North Shore isn’t all death tubes spitting over dry rock, or outer-reef bombs rolling into shore from a half-mile out. Those are just the waves we tend to obsess over and watch online the most. The Seven Mile Miracle is diverse, with waves ranging from treacherous closeouts to idyllic longboard spots and even some of the most fun sandbars you’ll ever find.
Conditions also change pretty quickly out on the North Shore though, so when you do drive up to the beach and spot a fun, playful sandbar, you can’t really expect it to look the same a few hours later.
Eli Hanneman is one of the most well-rounded surfers you’ll ever find, and he’s just as entertaining to watch hucking it over the ledge at Pipe and Backdoor as he is on a chest-high day at Rockies. But as winter wound down, he spotted something that looked beyond fun sitting right next to Pipe.
“In a span of two weeks the North Shore had a point break right and a psycho reeling left that I’ve never seen at Ehukai (Beach) in my life,” he says.
This. Looks. Fun.
