The Inertia

When one thinks of river surfing, save for Waimea,  Munich’s Eisbach wave is perhaps the most iconic spot in existence, a place credited as the home of riding landlocked features.  The Eisbach usually makes headlines thanks to viral river maneuvers – this time it was a tree crashing into the man-made stream as surfers in full neoprene enjoyed winter water levels. Record snowfall up to 17 inches in some parts of southern Germany that closed airports most likely weighed down trees like this one, especially as temperatures warmed, bringing branches, limbs, and trunks to the ground, or into the water.

Much of the city was apparently quiet over the weekend due to the snow, including the cancelation of a soccer match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin Saturday. Surfers obviously didn’t get the memo.

No word on the surfer that came off the wave as the tree fell. We reached out to get the lowdown but have yet to hear back. No news is good news, but that’s not an entanglement situation you could ever plan for. Yikes.
