The Inertia

Dylan Graves is the preeminent expert on weird waves, but this one spot has him stumped. “There’s kind of a wave here, but it’s not really a wave. It’s like a non-wave wave. You want it to be a wave, because the background- wow, that was actually a wave, though.” says Dylan while driving out to  a novelty spot on his home-turf of Isabela, Puerto Rico.

Once he walks onto the picturesque beach, Dylan elaborates on the contradictory nature of the place: On the one hand, it’s a beautiful beach, one that makes you want to take friends and family and soak it all in. On the other, it’s kind of a Shroedinger’s Wave. It both exists and doesn’t at the same time – mostly doesn’t.

On the day Dylan went to the spot for his latest YouTube post, the wave actually was there, though. In fact, it was pretty damn good, enough to entice style-master Mikey February to take part in a session. “Mikey was filming for an upcoming project he was working on and when some of the premiere waves weren’t really on, and some other novelty locations were, I was able to twist his arm to go check out some of PR rare gems,” explained Graves.

Afterwards, Dylan and Mikey were at no loss for words to describe the experience. “This place is so beautiful. Half the time you’re just sitting out there staring at the backdrop,” said February. ‘This is not a normal occurrence,” elaborated Graves. “It’s usually pretty closed out if it breaks and it doesn’t break that much. For this wave to even have a shred of hope to even do one turn, there needs to be a good mix of the right swell, right sand bar, right tide, so feels pretty special.”
