The Inertia

Way back in 2011, Rip Curl released a film called Seven Ghosts. It was the first time many people had laid eyes on a tidal bore, and it set the surfing world aflame. Known as Bono, the tidal bore in the film happens in Kampar River on Sumatra, and has since become something of a surfing destination with a whole community of surfers riding those weird waves.

A seemingly endless wave, ripping its way up a river in a strange phenomenon that looked to defy the laws of nature. A Bono wave can travel as much as 37 miles inland and can reportedly reach heights of up to 20 feet. Ever since Dylan Graves watched that film, surfing Bono has been on his bucket list. And he finally checked it off.

“In this video I break my whole experience down, from what I learn about the Bono to the locals who surf it, and even a little behind the scenes of the iconic Search trip in 2011,” Graves wrote. “Everything about this video is what keeps me out there filming and surfing these amazing wonders of the world we are so lucky to witness.”
