The Inertia

Dylan Graves is back with a brand new installment of his highly-watchable web series, Weird Waves, and the season premiere is an absolute banger. Literally.

In this episode, Graves heads to the Last Frontier, Alaska, in search of one of the strangest and potentially dangerous waves in the world – the kind that breaks after a chunk of glacial ice calves into the sea, plopping hard enough to create something that’s actually rideable.

Now, to be clear Graves isn’t the first to go glacier surfing. That honor belongs to Garrett McNamara who first surfed glacier waves in Alaska in 2007. But, unlike the footage that emerged from McNamara’s trip, Graves’ behind-the-scenes look at the experience highlights just how much patience is required to get a decent little runner. And even then, the whole thing is incredibly unpredictable.

His profiling of the Turnagain Arm Tidal bore scene – an Alaskan surfing classic – is pretty spot on as well.
