The Inertia

This Carlos Gauna cat knows what he’s doing. As we’ve written before (because, let’s face it, his material is wildly popular), Gauna knows the patterns of great white sharks in Southern California like they’re his pets. He’s spent hours cruising the coast, drone controls in hand, following the ocean’s apex predators as they interact with surfers, paddlers and all the other millions of ocean goers. But this is a new one. Gauna used his drone to warn a couple off fisherman that a great white shark was basically stalking their catch.

In the glassy conditions, Gauna moves his drone up and down to give the men in the boat a heads up. After they understood what he was doing, they were definitely appreciative. “(Here), we examine a close encounter between a spearfisherman and a curious great white shark,” Gauna wrote. “In one encounter, the shark gets very close to a fisherman who happens to be swimming next to his day’s catch. It’s a good example of understanding situations that have the potential to be dangerous if situational awareness is not considered.”

Gauna has a lot of content floating around the webosphere. You can find more of his videos here if you haven’t seen them, or follow him on Instagram.
