One way to find tiger sharks, says Carlos Gauna, is to find sea turtles. That’s something the drone master, also known as the Malibu Artist, has learned after years of watching sharks. Gauna has created thousands of hours of footage – mostly of the ocean’s apex predators, be it tiger sharks or great whites. This time, the videographer took a trip to Maui and caught some pretty fascinating footage of a tiger shark checking out a foiler.
I started the footage above right where the foiler and the shark meet. Gauna has a little hiccup and has to change batteries, but when the video continues, the foiler sees the drone and the shark, then makes a few circles around the large fish to get a better glimpse of it. Meanwhile, the shark does the same in the crystal-clear water.
The rest of the video is worth watching as well, with plenty of imagery of tigers hunting turtles and other ocean oddities.
Gauna has created one of the most viewed libraries on YouTube. Mostly because we’re all enthralled by sharks. And he’s captured a bunch of footy of sharks interacting with surfers. None of them violent, fortunately. You can find his page here, or follow him on Instagram.
