“We’re going to hop into the dos and don’ts of the North Shore,” starts Koa Rothman’s new video post. What follows is a refreshingly practical and candid delivery of some common and not-so-common sense advice for surfing the Seven Mile Miracle.
As Koa says at the top of the video, a lot of items from the list are broadly applicable to pretty much any surf break, like “listen to the lifeguards” and “don’t drop in on people.” However, he also delves into some more esoteric knowledge, like keeping an eye out for the North Shore’s rapidly changing conditions that can go from knee high to XL at the drop of a hat.
It’s all good advice, although many would say that a lot of it should already be common sense for an adequate surfer. If you didn’t already know not to ignore lifeguards, burn the locals, and paddle out in the middle of a set, the whole endeavor can be summed up by don’t number three: “Don’t surf Pipe.”
