The Inertia

Mullaghmore is not a wave for the faint of heart. It gets huge. It’s freezing. It’s incredibly heavy. And for all those reasons, it attracts a certain type of surfer. A surfer like Nate Florence. In the last few years, he’s been putting his stamp on gigantic waves all over the world. His “Slab Tour” has taken him to a variety of waves most people would run from. When a huge swell popped up on the forecast with conditions that looked just about perfect for giant Mullaghmore, he decided he’d better be there.

He wasn’t the only one, of course. Conor Maguire, Andrew Cotton, Gearóid Mcdaid, and Nic von Rupp were some of the familiar faces in the lineup on November 9, and as is often the case, they all pushed each other to the limit.

It doesn’t get much hairier than this session, but that’s exactly the way these guys like it. “Crazy session,” Nate said afterward. “It’s literally 25-foot kegs out there and boiling in the barrel. Huge boils. It’s so square, literally a 25-foot slab.”

Despite the fact that this session would put the fear of God into most, it’s a guarantee that it just added fuel to the fire for the guys — and they’ll be back as soon as Mullaghmore fires up again.
