With Titans of Mavericks having had their opening ceremony — and as winter swells build throughout the Northern Hemisphere — it felt like the right time to share this documentary. It’s an epic of sorts, if surf films could be labeled as such. Discovering Mavericks reaches beyond the limiting magazine cover shots and unearths the true story of this famous and deadly wave, from the decade it was surfed solely by lone surfing pioneer Jeff Clark to the events that followed, all of which led it to become one of the most famous big wave surfing spots in the world.
Narrated by actor Dean Winters, Discovering Mavericks captures the passion and dedication of surfers like Jay Moriarity (below), Peter Mel (above), Flea, Shane Dorian, Mark Foo, Brock Little, and Mike Parsons, honoring the sacrifice of all those who have dared to take on the unforgiving waves at Mavericks.
The documentary alone is enough to send shivers up your spine — imagine paddling out into the thick of it…
