There’s nothing really else to say about the Maui wildfire disaster other than it’s been a complete and utter tragedy. Lahaina has been destroyed, so many homes have been annihilated, families have been displaced and the footage coming out of the island is nothing short of terrifying. Like the clip at the end of this newscast of two boys and their mother trying to escape the flames in the ocean.
The death toll is now reportedly into the upper 90s, as authorities begin the meticulous search of buildings and structures in the area. Stories are horrific with people and families burning inside their cars.
Many Maui-born surfers have jumped into help like Ian Walsh, Kai Lenny, Matt Meola, and Zane Schweitzer and the Schweitzer family. Lenny actually went on his Instagram page, his face covered in what appears to be soot, to appeal to government officials to allow boat and Jet Ski access to the West Side in order to deliver important medications like insulin to citizens. It’s been a community effort on the Valley Isle. And it’s just the beginning. You can help. Find the proper places to donate here.
