If you have not scene Nathan Oldfield’s masterpiece, The Church of the Open Sky, then you have a problem in your life. Granted, it is an easily remedied one, but it is a problem nonetheless. Easily remedied because Oldfield has just made it available on iTunes.
The excerpt you see above features the inimitable Dave Rastovich, unencumbered and equipment free in Sri Lanka. With Rastovich in front of the lens and Oldfield behind—two of the best in their games and with similar perspectives on what makes a beautiful film—this section in particular is one of the best you’ll see in a surf film.
The Church of the Open Sky was shot in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka. It features Rasta, Lauren Lindsey Hill, Tom Wegener, Belinda Baggs, CJ Nelson, Alex Knost, and more. When it comes to awards, it cleaned up, nabbing Best Feature Film (San Diego), Spirit of the Festival (London), Best Cinematography (Berlin and Carolina), Best Heart & Soul (Cape Town) and Best Soundtrack (Florida, Ericeira, and Cape Town).
