This morning, a horde of costumed revelers descended on Cocoa Beach, Florida for the Surfing Santas event. The annual gathering, which is essentially an aquatic SantaCon, is now in its 15th year and previous iterations have seen 600 Santas draw crowds of over 10,000 onlookers. Based on photos and video of the massive crowd today, this year appears to have been no different.
There is also a charitable angle to the proceedings. According to a press release for the event, “Since 2013, Surfing Santas has raised more than $300,000 for charity, through donations and sales of official Surfing Santas T-shirts and raffles.” Proceeds from this year’s celebration will benefit Grind for Life, an organization that provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families when traveling long distances to doctors and hospitals, the Florida Surf Museum, and several local school sports teams.
