The Inertia

Clyde Aikau’s performance at The Eddie was one of the most inspiring things in surfing. At 66-years-old, Clyde paddled out at the event in memory of his brother. It was a special day–not only is The Eddie notoriously difficult to run (it requires conditions that almost never show up at Waimea Bay long enough to run the full event), but it would be Uncle Clyde’s last event. He has been competing for 51 years.

But of course, those 51 years have taken a toll on his body. Clyde, though, wasn’t phased. His performance at his brother’s favorite place was something that will not be forgotten for a long, long time. With a destroyed shoulder, a messed up knee, and a massive cramp in his thigh, he pushed through the pain and won everyone’s hearts.
