Surfing in the North Pacific is not for the faint of heart. We deal with ever-changing conditions, cold waves, rain hitting our face from all directions, and sometimes the swell doesn’t line up the way we like it. But it’s our home and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Maybe it’s the uncertainty that intrigues us in this lifelong pursuit. Maybe it’s something else. But what’s for certain is that this is where our awareness is cultivated.
We see people in the distance. They’re set on joining us in the ocean to take what they can for themselves. With utter disregard for the spiritual beings that swim below, they want to drill deep and remove what’s not theirs. Their global disease spreads and threatens to contaminate our waters. Their only focus is how many numbers can be accumulated in selfish, greedy accounts. They feed the machines fabricated under the guise of progress. But everyone knows exactly what it is: greed. They squint through binoculars with absolute disconnect. Trembling and scared, they realize they’ll no longer be allowed in the waters. Not if we have anything to say about it. We continue to paddle as they watch. Each wave we catch brings us in unison, as we align ourselves with the natural world.
Each year we converge on the Central Coast for a surf competition in Westport, Washington. We call it the Clean Water Classic. Surfrider Foundation joins us in embodying the ideals of the region. It’s a friendly competition that’s all about keeping the beaches and ocean clean. Spectators watch and participate in beach cleanups, talking amongst each other about ways in which we can conserve the beauty and natural resources of this area. The camaraderie among the surf community during these events is incredible. When we gather, we have strength and serve as ambassadors for the ocean. Here’s a little sneak peak into last year’s event.
Keep the water clean and have some fun by joining us for the 14th Annual Clean Water Classic on September 25-27. Get more information and see how you can get involved by visiting cleanwaterclassic.com
