The Inertia

Clay Marzo is, in my dumb little opinion, the best surfer in the world. The guy does things that no one else can fathom, and he does them with this weird regularity that proves it’s not a fluke. I spent a few amazing days with him — and others too — in Portugal, and he’s not just freakishly good at riding waves, he’s incredibly nice, too. Honest to a fault, sometimes, but you know exactly where you stand and how he’s feeling. It’s easy, because there’s no messing around, trying to figure out what he’s feeling. As far as I could see in the few short days, there are just a few things that make him happy: great waves and good food. Other things, too, but like most everyone who surfs, great waves and good food are generally things that will lift our moods. And when it comes to great waves and good food, where better than Indonesia?

Clay excels in all waves, but give the guy a barreling left and he’s going to blow minds. Such was case recently at Desert Point, Lombok, where Clay and a few others were stacking clips for the forthcoming Snapt5 film. Mason Ho grabbed Rory Pringle’s camera and pointed at his childhood friend / favorite surfer to capture Clay Marzo doing what Clay Marzo does best.
