Draw up a list of the most stylish surfers in the world – past, present, even future – and Rob Machado’s gonna be somewhere at the top. That style is on full display in the Color of Winter. It’s a project Rob worked on with renowned surf image-maker Pat Stacy that started five years ago, with the two setting out to capture surfing to fit a specific song. “Five years ago I called up Rob outta the blue and told him, ‘hey, the Andino family have graciously lent me their RED camera and housing and I gotta figure out how to use it,'” writes Pat. “‘There’s this song (the last song in the film) and I’ve always wanted to see how it would go with surfing and I think if we filmed for a month or two we could make a cool little short film…'”
Five years of winter surfing and filming around San Diego later, that “little short film” is finally here, and it’s a beauty, featuring a bundled-up Rob taking on breaks like Black’s Beach and Cardiff Reef in glorious conditions. “The film is slow and that’s the way we wanted it to be,” Pat continues. “Our hope is that it encourages people to slow down a bit and enjoy the simple, and easily taken for granted gift of throwing some boards in the car and going surfing around home.”
Get your Friday started with some laid back instrumentals and Rob’s clean and perfect lines on winter waves in California. You can learn more about the project, and check out the book, here.
