Italy’s an unlikely place for surf. Nestled in the Mediterranean, the Land of Pasta and Historical Old Buildings doesn’t receive nearly as much swell as other European surf havens along the Atlantic do. Like Spain, France, or the sh*t-your-pants swell magnet of Portugal.
But the Italians do, in fact, get waves.
The above edit comes to us from Nils Astrologo, an Italian surfer and filmmaker. At first glance the wave featured, which lies in the northeast town of Varazze, looks quite similar to Southern California’s premiere high-performance wave. Crumbly lip, A-frames, incredibly rippable. It’s a near spitting image of Lower Trestles! Ok, maybe it isn’t as good as everyone’s favorite SoCal skatepark, but still, it’s damn close. Now where’s our Italian Kolohe Andino? Or Chris Ward? Or Luca David?
