The Inertia

We here at The Inertia are very ugly. We’re physically disgusting looking people, which makes face-to-face encounters with other human beings exceptionally painful. More for them than us. That’s one of the benefits of working in a predominantly online environment. You can just be ugly and otherwise intolerable, and it’s rarely an issue that must be confronted head on. But we admire the beautiful people of the world. Ahhh…to be beautiful!

Enter Chase Wilson.

Mr. Wilson, a professional surfer from Newport Beach, California, has made it his mission to help surfers look less ugly. Maybe even give us a sense of style. He says, “Look slick.” Inspired by the Endless Summer aesthetic, Wilson has developed a line of hair care and grooming products that have firm roots in the Pacific. Wilson aspires for Byrd to become a global brand, and it’s well on its way to doing so.

He also lives in a shipping container. Two on the base and one on top. He’s designed it very nicely, though, and friends and “flock members” Luke Davis, Koa Smith, Dylan Goodale, and a host of very good surfers are typically passing through on any given day in Los Angeles. They throw big parties. Pretty girls attend. Music that will be popular in the near future plays. And there is a sense of glamor in the whole production. Throwback barber chairs, surfers, and pomade. It’s Los Angeles. That’s what Los Angeles does.

And while there is nothing directly related to the act of surfing on top of waves in pomade, it’s nice to see a surfer take a risk and build a business he’s passionate about. Never mind, the haters. It’s almost charity, if you look at it right. He’s helping us ugly people.
