The Inertia

Charly Quivront, the 27-year-old regular-foot professional surfer by way of France, has a few things besides competing on tour up his sleeve. A stylish powerhouse, Charly is no stranger to the silver screen with features in a number of beautiful surf edits, and his newest web series Ou Est Charly is no exception.

This series will appeal to anyone with a thirst for hearty surf travel: the first episode, titled “GAS CRAIC // A STRIKE MISSION TO IRELAND” includes beautiful footage of a nine-hour drive through France in a jam-packed van, a 15-hour ferry ride, and, of course, 16-mm-esque visuals to capture it all.

Charly explained the backstory behind the film: “We were in Hossegor, fall was good, but we needed a new adventure. We took the van and drove north towards Ireland aiming to experience those many slabs of cold water the Emerald Isle has to offer.”

All of the footage, from the sweeping landscapes to the casual bar conversations, is cinematic in its own way, and the entire video, at just under eight-minutes long, views much more like a film than a YouTube vlog.

Produced by filmmaker Simon Levalois-Bazer (who has quite the impressive portfolio himself) and with additional footage from Yentl Touboul, Gabriel Boin, and Andrew Kaineder, the first part of the film is comprised of the journey itself, with a solemn voice over from Rick Whelan, but the second part (accompanied by a dramatic musical shift to a much faster-paced, atmospheric, rock song by The KVB) is nothing but the full-suit-hooded Charly, and special guest Gearoid McDaid (“the G Man”), getting shacked out of their minds. In frigid waters. Over and over again.

The barrels seem endless, the water is delightfully green, and the moody lighting of dark grassy pastures and cloudy skies only accentuates the perfection of it all. And it sounds like it felt as good to them as it looked to us. Charly said the trip “was cold and intense but we will return!” With seven more of these edits to come this year, so will we.
