It’s day 53 (or is it 54?) of hard lockdown in South Africa. And it sucks. The waves have been firing and surfing is banned. To make matters worse, when we finally do get an ease of the lockdown from level 4 to level 3, the surfing ban will remain.
Surfers have staged protests only to be shut down. Some have been arrested and some have paid admission of guilt fines that could lead to a criminal record. Ultimately, that could mean no entry into places like Indonesia and New Zealand, just to name two.
The army is on the streets, the people are in their houses, and the waves keep pouring through.
Just before lockdown, however, Durban surfer, sometimes QS campaigner, and High Performance Surfing Academy Head Coach Chad Du Toit scored incredible surf on the south coast of Natal. Chad picked up a couple of decent results on the WSL Africa Tour last year, as well as a good placing at the Nias Pro QS 3,000, and knows how to nail an air or put a good combo down.
