The Inertia

International Surfing Day will take place tomorrow, Saturday, June 15. And while the day often cops flack for being a “made up holiday” akin to Valentine’s Day (or that every day you surf is International Surfing Day), the celebration’s environmental ethos is worthy of praise. Unlike other holidays that rely on driving consumers to buy cards, candy, flowers, or gifts, ISD has, since its inception, been as much about spending the day surfing as it is about protecting the oceans and beaches for future generations.

This year marks the fifteenth ISD and to celebrate the Surfrider Foundation has partnered with WSL Pure to encourage everyone to take the pledge to #StopTrashingWaves. Between the WSL and Surfrider, there are countless local beach cleanups and paddle-outs that will take place this year across the globe (see the map below), so there’s no excuse not to get involved.

“Surfrider’s volunteer-led network of coastal defenders worldwide are taking action every day to be ocean stewards of our natural playground,” said Surfrider’s Marketing Director, Eddie Anaya. “This International Surfing Day, we’re banding together to bring as many people to the beach as possible to enjoy the stoke of surfing and encourage everyone to contribute to protecting our coastlines.”
